When you need a good cry!Aug 31, 2010 I cannot read this book without weeping, to the point where my children would beg me to read the book when they were younger just so that they could see mommy cry--not really being cruel but they were just amazed that the waterworks would start so quickly!
We who have loved our dogs will find great comfort in the imagery of this book, whether or not it aligns with our own belief systems. My children love this book, too because they have lost their dear dog friends as well. It's nice to think of the dogs in a happy place.
This could be frightening for very young children (especially if their parent cries as I do), but for older chidlren and adults I think it is a very sweet book and it's OK to cry for the dogs you have loved.
Review from Books That Heal KidsAug 17, 2010 Well, get your tissues out. You're going to need them after reading these. They are beautiful. When I was younger and we lost our Irish Setter I was quite concerned (like the good Catholic I was) about whether or not dogs made it to heaven or not. I wanted to know our family member was OKAY and HAPPY. Yes, I was one of those kids who just wouldn't let it drop. I worried a lot about our pup and asked my mom all kinds of questions about death and animals. My mom told me a story about how dogs, cats, and all animals had a place in heaven and were taken care of. I cannot tell you how comforting this was to hear. It helped me to move on and have peace about it. So when I found Dog Heaven and Cat Heaven it was like listening to that healing story all over again. So if you are a spiritual family, these are books you should consider reading to your child if a pet passes. If you are not spiritual, I still think you should read them. They are not preachy and I also noticed God is different hues throughout the pages. I've used this line in other reviews and have to say it again....this is bibliotherapy at it's best.
wonderful bookAug 03, 2010 When my golden died years ago someone gave me this book. And now I give it to others. Wonderful book.
Very comforting for kids and adultsAug 02, 2010 My family loves the book! We have given it several times to family and friends that have lost their beloved dog. I really think this book comforts you as you imagine what heaven will be like for your dog. It will make you cry and smile all at the same time. Wonderful book!!!!
comfort after the loss of a dogJul 29, 2010 I found this in the children's section of a book store years ago and bought copies for both sisters, as we are all "dog people." Since then, I try to keep a few copies here at home so that we're ready to give one to any friend who loses a dog. I buy in quantity! It's very comforting. We've also taken a few copies to the clinic where we take our dog. Inside, we wrote that the books are to be borrowed for as long as needed and then brought back for others to read when the time comes. Cynthia Rylant is definitely a "dog person" herself - she knows what it's like to lose a special friend.
