First Time With Olivia Will Be The LastDec 27, 2009 Our girls (5 and 2) received three Olivia books (Forms a Band, Missing Toy & Saves the Circus) for Christmas from a relative. They will be going back to the store. I read some of the reviews for these books and was amazed at how many people love Olivia. My husband and I are not at all impressed with Olivia. I think Olivia is a mouthy, disrespectful, spoiled brat in all three books. As "Book Loving Mom" points out in her review of this book, Olivia goes to school and tells an obvious lie and when the teacher challenges her twice on the truthfulness of her story, she lies repeatedly but the teacher does nothing but look exasperated. This is compounded by the fact that Olivia openly defies her mom at the end of the book and once again suffers no consequences.
There were several comments posted about Olivia and her uniform. I also think she is bratty about how she talks about the uniform but the thing that really gets me is she heads off to school after "accessorizing" the uniform with striped stockings, bows on her ears, etc. This is fine except for the fact that in most schools which require uniforms, she would have been sent home to change. But Olivia simply defies the rules and gets away with it. This is a terrible message to be teaching children to prepare them for a world that at least for now has consequences to breaking the rules.
Overall, we are very disappointed in the Olivia books. Our daughters love to read but these books send all of the wrong messages. Olivia is certainly not the role model we want to encourage for our daughters.

Irrepressible and droll--that's our Olivia!Jul 05, 2009 Ian Falconer is an author/illustrator without an identity crisis or low self-esteem. How do I know? Find his name on the book cover. It isn't there--all attention is focused on Olivia. O.L.I.V.I.A. "Olivia Saves the Circus." Not Olivia helps the circus. Not Olivia works for the circus. Just: Olivia Saves the Circus. Bold. Direct. Matter-of-fact.
It's Olivia's turn to tell about her vacation. Here's Olivia--center of attention, eyes focused on her. The story: Her mother, old little brother, and Olivia go to the circus (new little brother can't go because he still naps). Today, of all days, all the circus performers call in sick. Someone must save the circus. Luckily, Olivia can role-play.
There she goes: elephant acrobat, Tatooed Lady, Lion Tamer, juggler, clown, tight-rope walker, and more. However, it is as the Flying Olivia that she excels! It takes four fold-out pages to demonstrate Olivia's flying and bouncing abilities. The End.
My favorite part is the teacher's reaction to this bundle of obviously untrue story bits:
"Was that true?"
"Pretty true."
"All true?"
"Pretty all true."
"Are you sure, Olivia?"
"To the best of my recollection."
At bedtime Olivia's mom reminds her not to jump on the bed. Of course, she does. Her mother hollers, "No jumping! Who do you think you are--Queen of the Trampoline?" Turn the page. There quietly tucked in her bed, arms under her head, Olivia thinks: "Maybe." This has to be the most perfect ending in all literature.
Well, yes, I love Olivia! She is droll. She is irrepressible. She is ebullient. And she dares to imagine the impossible. One of Ian Falconer's characteristic trademarks is a poster of a famous real-life person who is role-model material in individuality, strong will, and leadership. In this book it is Eleanor Roosevelt. Another thing that Ian wisely adds to his story is an understanding, kind mother, who treats Olivia with respect, gentle love, and firmness when needed. Because of these things, the Olivia books make up one of the very best children's series on the shelves.
Olivia books are great!Apr 03, 2009 I bought this book as a gift for my little friend Olivia, she loved it!!
Olivia Saves the CircusSep 12, 2008 I'm well and truly over 13 years of age. However Olivia and her creator Ian Falconer are my heroes. They are warm, wonderful, real and funny.
Cute, but not my favorite Olivia taleApr 21, 2007 The first two pages are the best in "Olivia Saves the Circus." That aside, the basic story is that Olivia, during show-and-tell, "embellishes" her trip to the circus. The drawings are fabulous as usual, but the plotline is a little dry. Still, my daughter loves it because it does capture the spirit of Olivia, though the story is very one-dimensional compared to the other Olivia books. And check out Olivia's "Remember the Maine" tatoo - it's a hoot!
