good serviceJul 11, 2010 The Olivia book arrived in excellent condition and in a timely manner.(it arrived in time for what I needed it for) I was happy with this purchase.
Wonderful seriesJun 25, 2010 The Olivia book series, and this book in particular are big hits at our house. My daughter is in love with Olivia, already asking that we start buying the books (we usually check them out from the library), and asking for an Olivia "toy" to sleep with.
Olivia is a charming little "girl" (pig) that is very relatable for children. The illustrations are engaging yet simple. Definitely a wonderful series that children can enjoy and understand.
We thoroughly enjoy this bookMar 22, 2010 When we first read this book to my four-year-old daughter, she didn't like it. BUT, that was because she and Olivia were very much the same. Mischievious, spirited, and occasionally naughty enough to be disciplined. Since then, it has become a regular in our bedtime rotation of books. The artwork is great and the story is very applicable to our everyday.

A+ illustrations, C- attitudeMar 17, 2010
What I loved:
The artwork.
The artwork.
The artwork.
The skill and subtly of shading is breathtaking. The minimalist palette (black & white plus red) is brave, and certainly helps to highlight key elements (mostly Olivia's clothes!). I am reminded of the ghost-activated inventory in The Sixth Sense. In any case it should come as no surprise that Mr. Falconer is a talented set designer.
What I didn't love:
The many examples of poor behavior.
I can accept that a piglet like Olivia has an ego bigger than her size belies. But letting a young child act out in a selfish and often destructive manner is no recipe for success. Maybe it works in a pigpen but then again, Olivia is anthropomorphized so we must hold her to a higher standard than most swine.
Painting on the walls à la Pollock and intentionally frightening her younger brother are actions not to be admired or laughed at. Olivia's parents are of course complicit to some degree. Allowing her to try on upwards of twenty outfits every morning, and negotiating before bedtime, would never stand in this house. Finally, and possibly most egregious, the goodnight exchange of "I love you anyway" seems far from a secure and sincere expression of love.

I completely agree with S. Pisko's reviewMar 04, 2010 (which gives it one star), in that the book gives children completely wrong idea, so on those grounds one star is well deserved. On the other hand, my son (a two year old), likes the book, so this should be worth some more stars.
